Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry declared on Monday that he and his “group” would entirely boycott the upcoming general elections, denouncing the electoral process as fake. The imprisoned politician conveyed this stance in a handwritten letter addressed to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), sharing a copy on his official social media account on X. In the letter, Fawad explicitly stated, “Under these circumstances, my group and I announce a complete boycott of these elections.”

However, it remained unclear which specific group he was referring to. Fawad Chaudhry had been arrested in Islamabad on November 4 on charges of corruption and has remained in custody since then.

In his letter to the ECP, Fawad highlighted the ECP’s failure to conduct elections in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab last year after the respective provincial assemblies were dissolved. He emphasized that the primary purpose of elections is to empower the public with the authority to choose their representatives.

Considering it a “waste of time” to demand resignations from ECP officials, Fawad asserted that the ECP had “failed horribly in fulfilling its responsibilities.” He argued that a government formed through such elections would lack not only a moral mandate but also a legal one, rendering it incapable of effectively addressing the country’s crises and challenges.

Fawad Chaudhry’s decision to boycott the upcoming general elections reflects his discontent with the electoral process and the perceived shortcomings of the Election Commission of Pakistan. His stance adds another layer of complexity to the political landscape, raising questions about the legitimacy of the electoral process and the challenges faced by the ECP in ensuring fair and transparent elections.
