The risk of renewed military conflict between the United States and Iran remains high as the US military prepares for a possible major attack while diplomatic efforts continue to prevent another escalation.
US President Donald Trump is considering three possible options: resuming military strikes against Iran, reaching a diplomatic agreement with Tehran or maintaining economic pressure. The decision comes after the Republican Party suffered major losses in the midterm elections, raising concerns about the domestic political impact of another military confrontation.
According to a report by American news outlet Axios, preparations for a possible resumption of major US military operations against Iran have entered their final stages. Additional military equipment and assets are also being deployed to the region.
However, Trump has not made a final decision. Even some of his close advisers reportedly remain uncertain about whether he will choose military action or continue diplomatic efforts.
JD Vance Urges Trump to Reach an Agreement With Iran
US Vice President JD Vance has emerged as one of the leading voices within the Trump administration supporting a negotiated settlement with Tehran.
According to Axios, Vance has warned Trump that another war with Iran is unpopular among American voters and could create serious political problems for Republicans.
Vance has reportedly argued that continuing military operations could carry significant political costs, particularly following the party’s disappointing midterm election performance.
He has also privately criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assessment of Iran, reportedly arguing that Netanyahu had been wrong on every count regarding the issue.
Several other senior advisers are also said to favour ending the conflict through negotiations rather than restarting military operations.
Despite these concerns, Trump has not ruled out another attack.
Qatar Working to Prevent Another US-Iran War
While American military preparations continue, Qatar is working to prevent another escalation between Washington and Tehran.
Qatari mediators are reportedly trying to secure support from both countries for a draft agreement aimed at preventing renewed fighting.
The proposed arrangement could also create an opportunity for direct negotiations between the United States and Iran in the coming days.
The diplomatic initiative comes as both sides face pressure to avoid another major confrontation.
Meanwhile, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other Trump advisers reportedly favour maintaining the US naval blockade and economic pressure on Iran.
Their approach would aim to increase pressure on Tehran without immediately returning to military operations.
Iran Celebrates Republican Midterm Election Losses
Iran has also responded to the Republican Party’s election setback in the United States.
Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, described the Republican losses as a political victory for Tehran.
In a statement posted on X, Rezaei claimed that Iran had handed Trump a strategic defeat on the battlefield and in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as a political defeat in Washington.
His comments have added another complication to diplomatic efforts.
According to Axios, diplomats involved in mediation efforts, Trump advisers and Middle East experts believe Iran’s reaction could increase the chances of Trump returning to military action.
Trump Says He Would Launch War Again
Trump has defended his decision to launch military action against Iran despite acknowledging the economic and political consequences of the conflict.
On Wednesday, he said the war had contributed to higher gasoline prices in the United States. However, he maintained that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remained a major priority.
When asked when the conflict would end, Trump said:
“Whenever I wanted to. But it’s got to be done right, because they can’t have a nuclear weapon.”
He also indicated that he would make the same decision again if necessary to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
What Happens Next?
The next move by Washington remains uncertain as military preparations and diplomatic negotiations continue simultaneously.
Trump must weigh the possibility of another military campaign against the economic and political consequences of prolonged conflict.
Qatar’s mediation efforts could provide an opportunity to restart negotiations, while the US administration continues to consider military and economic options.
For now, the possibility of renewed fighting remains, with the coming days potentially playing an important role in determining the next phase of the US-Iran conflict.
