The United Kingdom has clarified the requirements for family members joining Skilled Worker visa holders. The rules cover partners and children applying from abroad or already living in the country.
The requirements include financial evidence, relationship conditions, and eligibility restrictions. These changes are particularly important for Pakistani professionals, nurses, and care workers planning to move with their families.
Under the rules, eligible dependants include husbands, wives, civil partners, and unmarried partners. Children under 18 can also apply if they meet the required conditions.
Partners must be at least 18 years old. They must prove their marriage, civil partnership, or relationship of at least two years.
Children must normally live with the Skilled Worker. Exceptions apply when they are away for full-time education. They must also remain unmarried.
Some Skilled Workers Cannot Bring Dependants
The United Kingdom has introduced restrictions affecting certain care and medium-skilled occupations. These restrictions limit who can bring family members from abroad.
Care workers and senior care workers face specific eligibility conditions. They can bring partners or children if they have continuously worked in the same Skilled Worker visa role since before March 11, 2024.
Children born in the UK are also covered by an exception.
Similar restrictions apply to workers in medium-skilled occupations. They must have held a Skilled Worker visa in such a role since before July 22, 2025.
Children born in the UK are also exempt from this restriction. Prison officers extending or switching their visas have a separate exception.
Financial Requirements for Family Members
Applicants joining a Skilled Worker from abroad must meet specific maintenance requirements. The same applies to family members who have lived in the UK for less than 12 months.
The required amounts are:
- £285 for a partner, approximately Rs. 105,500
- £315 for the first child, approximately Rs. 116,600
- £200 for each additional child, approximately Rs. 74,000
Applicants must keep the required money for at least 28 consecutive days. These funds must be separate from the worker’s own maintenance requirement.
The main Skilled Worker must show £1,270, approximately Rs. 470,000. The money can belong to the applicant, the worker, or the child’s other parent.
Families may not need to provide this evidence in certain situations. This applies if everyone has lived in the UK legally for at least 12 months.
An A-rated employer can also certify financial support for the family’s first month.
Visa Fees and Additional Costs
Families must also consider visa application fees and the immigration health surcharge. These costs are separate from the required bank balance.
A Skilled Worker dependant applying from outside the United Kingdom pays £819 for a visa lasting up to three years. The immigration health surcharge usually costs £1,035 annually.
For a spouse applying for a three-year visa, the combined charges reach £3,924. This amount is approximately Rs. 1.45 million, excluding maintenance funds.
A Pakistani worker bringing a spouse and one child must show £600 in family maintenance funds. Adding the worker’s £1,270 requirement brings the total to £1,870.
That equals approximately Rs. 692,000. The required amount must generally remain available for 28 days.
Other Conditions for Dependants
Partners sponsored in certain occupations may need criminal record certificates. They must provide certificates from countries where they lived for 12 months or longer.
This requirement covers the previous 10 years of their adult life. Exceptions may apply when obtaining a certificate is not practical.
Some people already in the UK cannot switch to a dependant visa. These include visitors, short-term students, and seasonal workers.
Domestic workers in private households also face restrictions. People with permission outside the Immigration Rules are also excluded.
Work and Study Rights After Approval
Approved dependants receive visas linked to the main Skilled Worker’s immigration status. A partner’s visa usually expires on the same date as the worker’s permission.
A child’s visa generally expires when the earlier of their parents’ visas ends. Different arrangements apply when both parents are settled or British citizens.
Dependants can work in the United Kingdom, including through self-employment and voluntary work. However, they cannot work as professional sportspersons or sports coaches.
They can also study, although certain courses may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate. Dependants cannot access public funds.
Applications submitted from outside the country usually receive decisions within three weeks. Applicants whose applications are refused can request an Administrative Review.
