Twitter announces another restriction on important feature

Twitter users will soon need to be verified in order to use TweetDeck, according to a post from the social network firm on Monday.

According to the company, the change will take effect in 30 days.

Twitter made the announcement in a tweet announcing an updated TweetDeck with additional capabilities. It was unclear whether Twitter will charge users for both the new and old TweetDeck versions. Twitter did not reply immediately to a request for comment.

Charging for TweetDeck, which was previously free and is extensively used by businesses and news organisations to conveniently monitor content, could help Twitter, which has battled to keep advertising revenue under billionaire Elon Musk’s ownership.

The change comes only days after Musk stated that both confirmed and unverified users would be limited to seeing a certain number of posts each day “to address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation.”

His statement provoked a furious outcry from Twitter users, and ad experts predicted it would damage new CEO Linda Yaccarino, who took over last month.

Individuals must pay $8 per month to validate their accounts, while businesses must spend $1,000 per month.
