Study Warns Rising Heat Could Increase Deaths in Pakistan

A new study has warned that climate change could lead to a sharp rise in heat-related deaths in Pakistan by 2050 as extreme temperatures become more frequent and access to affordable cooling remains limited.

The research, conducted by the Climate Impact Lab at the University of Chicago, estimates that climate-driven warming could cause around 430,000 additional deaths globally each year by 2050. The report highlights the growing health risks associated with rising temperatures, particularly in developing countries.

Pakistan is among 18 countries identified as being caught in a “mortality-cooling trap,” where dangerous heat combines with limited access to affordable cooling solutions. According to the study, around 89 percent of Pakistan’s population could be living in affected regions by 2050.

The report estimates that Pakistan could experience more than 150,000 additional temperature-related deaths every year if current climate trends continue. Researchers say the country’s growing exposure to extreme heat makes it one of the nations most vulnerable to the health impacts of climate change.

Experts noted that the challenge goes beyond electricity shortages. They said many households struggle with the high cost of air conditioners, cooling equipment, and electricity bills, while unreliable power grids further limit access to effective cooling during heatwaves.

The study also pointed to unequal access to cooling technologies, warning that vulnerable and low-income communities face the greatest risks. Without affordable and reliable cooling, millions of people could remain exposed to dangerous temperatures in the coming decades.

Researchers recommended a range of measures to reduce future heat-related deaths, including stronger heat action plans, improved early warning systems, more reliable electricity networks, urban greening initiatives, and the creation of public cooling centres.

Energy experts added that expanding renewable energy could help improve access to cooling, but stressed that broader policy reforms are needed to make cooling affordable and protect vulnerable communities from the growing threat of extreme heat.
