The Sindh government has decided to restore the Saturday holiday for both public and private schools across the province. At the same time, schools will increase daily teaching hours by one hour to make up for the lost classroom time.
According to official details, the additional teaching hour will help cover the academic time that would otherwise be lost because of the weekly Saturday holiday. The government believes this approach will allow schools to complete the curriculum without reducing learning opportunities for students.
Officials said the decision is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to reduce expenses and conserve energy. These measures are being introduced without compromising the quality of education or affecting students’ academic progress.
The latest announcement comes only days after the provincial government introduced a six-day school week. Under that earlier decision, educational institutions were directed to remain open from Monday to Saturday beginning August 1, 2026, after the summer vacation.
The previous notification applied to both public and private educational institutions throughout Sindh. It required schools to resume regular classes six days a week as part of the new academic schedule.
However, the policy was later clarified by Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah. He explained that the six-day working week was compulsory only for government schools. Private schools were not required to follow the same schedule and could continue operating according to their own academic calendars and management policies.
Following the latest review, the government has now decided to restore the Saturday holiday across both public and private schools. This change creates a common weekly schedule while balancing classroom learning through longer teaching hours on regular school days.
Education officials believe that extending daily classroom time is a practical solution. It allows schools to maintain the required number of teaching hours without keeping students and teachers in school for six days every week.
The revised timetable is also expected to support the government’s energy conservation efforts. Reducing one school operating day each week can lower electricity and operational costs while allowing educational activities to continue without major disruption.
Parents, teachers, and school administrators are expected to adjust their schedules according to the updated policy. Schools will now be responsible for incorporating the additional teaching hour into their daily timetable while ensuring that lessons continue smoothly.
