Spain’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph was capped by a clean sweep of FIFA’s top individual awards, with midfielder Rodri crowned the tournament’s Golden Ball winner after inspiring La Roja to a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final.
The Manchester City star completed an extraordinary comeback from a career-threatening ACL injury to lead Spain to their second World Cup title, adding another milestone to an already glittering career.
Rodri Completes Historic Football Collection
Rodri was named the best player of the tournament, becoming only the fourth footballer to win the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, UEFA Champions League and the Ballon d’Or, joining legends Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and Zinedine Zidane.
The 30-year-old described the award as the perfect ending to an emotional journey after returning from a ruptured ACL that sidelined him for months.
“It feels like the perfect script. I certainly didn’t expect this,” Rodri said.
He also hoped his comeback would inspire young footballers.
“A player can touch the heavens, descend into hell, and come back. It’s a lesson in overcoming adversity.”
Despite receiving the Golden Ball, Rodri insisted Spain’s World Cup triumph was the greatest achievement.
“This group is incredible. We’re two-time world champions. That’s the hardest achievement in football.”
Spain’s Team Spirit Proves Decisive
Rodri credited Spain’s success to teamwork, praising his teammates for remaining patient before Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in extra time.
“That’s the secret of this national team. We fight for each other. In the end, God rewards you.”
He also acknowledged Argentina’s quality but believed Spain deserved to lift the trophy.
“Argentina are difficult to break down, but Spain are simply very good. The result was fair.”
Messi, Mbappé Complete Golden Ball Podium
Argentina captain Lionel Messi finished second in the voting to receive the Silver Ball, narrowly missing out on becoming the first player to win three FIFA World Cup Golden Ball awards.
France superstar Kylian Mbappé claimed the Bronze Ball and also secured the Golden Boot after finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer with 10 goals.
Pau Cubarsí Named Best Young Player
Spain defender Pau Cubarsí received the FIFA Best Young Player Award after an outstanding tournament.
The 19-year-old Barcelona centre-back started all eight matches, helping Spain keep seven clean sheets while conceding only one goal throughout the competition.
Cubarsí became the first defender to win the award and only the fifth teenager to lift the FIFA World Cup.
He now joins a distinguished list of previous winners including Lukas Podolski, Thomas Müller, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappé and Enzo Fernández.
Unai Simón Wins Golden Glove
Goalkeeper Unai Simón was awarded the Golden Glove after producing one of the finest goalkeeping performances in World Cup history.
The Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper recorded seven clean sheets, setting a new tournament record, while Spain conceded just one goal in eight matches—the fewest by any World Cup-winning team.
His shutout streak reached 649 minutes, surpassing the previous World Cup clean-sheet records held by Fabien Barthez, Oliver Kahn, Gianluigi Buffon and Iker Casillas.
Martínez Sets Final Record
Although Argentina fell short in the final, goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez delivered a memorable individual performance.
Martínez made 11 saves, setting a new World Cup final record, including a stunning stoppage-time penalty save from Lamine Yamal after Argentina had been reduced to ten men.
However, Ferran Torres eventually broke the deadlock in extra time to hand Spain the world title.
Spain ended the tournament as deserving champions, with Rodri’s inspirational leadership, Cubarsí’s defensive excellence and Simón’s record-breaking goalkeeping underpinning one of the most dominant World Cup campaigns in modern football.
