The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has assigned nine major road projects worth Rs1.6 billion to the Communication and Works Department due to its limited capacity to execute the work. The projects are aimed at improving and rehabilitating important roads across the garrison city.
Under the arrangement, the RMC will provide the required funds, while the Communication and Works Department will execute the projects within the municipal corporation’s jurisdiction. The Divisional Development Working Party (DDWP) has directed the department to start work as soon as possible and complete all nine projects by December 31.
The projects include the rehabilitation of Khyaban-I-Sir Syed Road, Bokra Road, 5th Road and Rawal Road from Ali Nawaz Chowk to Murree Road. Chandani Chowk Commercial Market Road, Railway Workshop Road, China Market-Gordon College Road, Satellite Town 4th B Road and Band Khana Road are also part of the development plan.
The nine road projects vary in length from 0.8 to 2.4 kilometres. Their individual costs range from around Rs115 million to Rs248 million. The projects cover several important routes and commercial and residential areas of Rawalpindi.
According to a senior district administration official, the divisional administration assigned the projects to the Communication and Works Department to speed up the rehabilitation of major roads in the city. The department has been instructed to ensure that construction work meets the required quality standards.
In addition to the nine RMC projects, three other road schemes belonging to the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) and District Council have also been assigned to the Communication and Works Department.
These projects include the reconstruction of Ch. Bostan Khan Road from Chaklala Scheme-III to the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench, Chakri Road and the road leading towards Falcon Chowk along Islamabad Expressway.
The three additional projects are currently awaiting approval from the Provincial Development Working Party. Once approval is granted, the Communication and Works Department will begin the work, while the respective civic bodies will provide the necessary funds.
The divisional administration has also directed the department to maintain construction quality throughout the projects. Officials have been asked to use proper construction materials and ensure that the road schemes are completed within the December 31 deadline.
The road rehabilitation programme is expected to cover several key routes in Rawalpindi and improve road conditions across different parts of the city. Further progress will depend on the timely start and completion of the assigned development work.
