The spillways of Rawal Dam in Islamabad have been opened after heavy rainfall caused the reservoir’s water level to rise, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures to manage the inflow.
According to the district administration, the decision was made after the water level reached 1,748.30 feet. Deputy Commissioner Islamabad directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert and ensure a timely response in case of any emergency.
Authorities also advised residents to stay away from streams, drains, and areas near fast-flowing water. Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel near waterways until the situation returns to normal.
Before opening the spillways, warning sirens were sounded to alert people living in nearby areas. Officials said the precautionary announcement was made to ensure public safety before water was released from the dam.
Following the release, the reservoir’s water level dropped from 1,748.30 feet to 1,747 feet. A Sub-Divisional Officer stated that approximately 6,283 cusecs of water were discharged from the dam, helping lower the water level by around two feet.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) informed all relevant departments before the spillways were opened to ensure coordinated emergency preparedness. Authorities said all concerned agencies remained in contact throughout the operation.
Officials have advised the public to continue following safety instructions and monitor weather updates, as monsoon rains are expected to continue in several parts of the country. Emergency teams remain on standby to respond to any developing situation.
