Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced an expansion of the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar (ACAG) housing programme by introducing interest-free loans for homeowners who need to repair unsafe houses or construct additional floors on their existing homes.
Under the revised scheme, eligible families will be able to obtain up to Rs500,000 to renovate old or damaged houses. In addition, the government will offer interest-free loans of up to Rs1 million to those wishing to build an extra floor on their homes to accommodate growing family needs.
The announcement was made during a meeting held to review the progress of the ACAG programme. Speaking on the occasion, Maryam Nawaz said the initiative is intended to improve public safety and prevent incidents caused by structurally weak buildings, referring to the recent building collapse in Kahna as an example of the risks posed by unsafe housing.
Officials informed the meeting that the housing programme has already approved interest-free loans for more than 180,000 families across Punjab. The provincial government has allocated Rs217.8 billion for the project, making it one of the largest housing initiatives in the province.
According to the briefing, more than 134,000 houses have already been completed under the programme, while construction work on thousands of additional homes is currently underway.
The chief minister instructed the relevant departments to launch the newly approved loan categories within the next three days. She also directed officials to keep the application process simple and accessible so that deserving families can benefit from the scheme without unnecessary delays or complicated procedures.
Maryam Nawaz reiterated her government’s commitment to providing safe and secure housing for citizens. She said the Punjab government believes in offering practical financial support to people living in dangerous or deteriorating homes instead of making promises without action.
She also warned that any negligence, delays, or lack of transparency in implementing the flagship housing programme would not be tolerated. The chief minister emphasized that the expanded ACAG initiative aims to improve living conditions, protect families from unsafe structures, and make affordable housing assistance available to more people across Punjab.
