Lahore’s Basant festival will now be celebrated from March 12 to 14, 2027, after the Punjab cabinet approved a summary proposing revised dates for the popular cultural event.
The decision changes the festival schedule previously announced by the provincial government. Basant, traditionally associated with spring, kite-flying and Lahore’s cultural identity, is expected to return under a regulated framework governing the manufacturing, sale and use of kites and kite strings.
Basant 2027 to Take Place in March
According to the report, the Punjab cabinet approved the revised dates following a proposal submitted by the Lahore deputy commissioner’s office.
Three days before the cabinet’s decision, the deputy commissioner’s office had issued a notification proposing that Basant be held from March 12 to 14, 2027. A summary was subsequently sent to the provincial government for approval.
With the cabinet’s approval, the proposed March schedule has replaced the earlier dates announced for the festival.
The three-day celebration is expected to allow kite-flying across Lahore district, except in designated prohibited areas. Participants will also be required to use only approved materials under the proposed arrangements.
Kite-Flying Rules and Sale Schedule
The proposed framework outlines specific timelines for the manufacturing, purchase, transportation, storage and sale of kites and kite strings.
Manufacturing would be permitted until March 14, 2027. The purchase, transportation and storage of kites and kite strings would be allowed from February 1, while sales to the general public would begin on February 10.
These arrangements are intended to regulate commercial activity ahead of the festival and establish a defined period for kite-related businesses and participants.
The restrictions on materials and prohibited areas are also an important part of the proposed framework, particularly given the safety concerns historically associated with kite-flying in Lahore.
Participants and traders will need to follow the applicable rules governing permitted materials and locations during the festival.
Earlier Schedule Had Set Basant for January and February
In September, the Punjab government had approved a 10-day Basant schedule running from January 29 to February 7, 2027, with a break on February 5 for Kashmir Day.
The newly approved March dates represent a significant change to that earlier timetable, shortening the announced festival period to three days.
The revised schedule also provides a different timeline for activities surrounding the event, including the sale and movement of kites and kite strings.
Basant’s Return to Lahore
Basant holds a special place in Lahore’s cultural history, with kite-flying traditionally marking the arrival of spring. The festival brings together families, businesses and visitors for celebrations across the city.
This year, Basant was celebrated in Lahore from February 6 to 8, marking the revival of a tradition that had remained largely absent for more than two decades.
Its return renewed interest in the city’s spring festivities, while also bringing attention to the need for clear regulations and effective enforcement.
What Residents Need to Know
Under the revised schedule, Basant 2027 is set to take place in Lahore from March 12 to 14. The proposed arrangements permit kite-flying across the district, except in prohibited areas, and require the use of approved materials.
The timeline for commercial activities begins earlier, with the purchase, transportation and storage of kites and kite strings allowed from February 1 and public sales scheduled to start on February 10.
Residents, kite sellers and manufacturers should follow official notifications for the applicable restrictions and any further instructions issued by the authorities before the festival.
The revised dates give Lahore a new timetable for the next Basant celebration, with public safety and compliance with the rules remaining important considerations.
