The Punjab government has started preparations for Basant Lahore 2027, with plans to organise the three-day festival as an international-standard event. Officials have begun reviewing arrangements well ahead of the celebrations.
A meeting was held to discuss preparations under the chairmanship of Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Additional Director Rao Tasleem Akhtar. Officials reviewed plans for decorations and other arrangements across Lahore.
The meeting discussed city-wide decorations ahead of Basant. Major roads and important locations across Lahore are expected to receive special decorations as part of the festival preparations.
Authorities have also started the process of issuing manufacturing licenses for kites and strings. The early process is aimed at ensuring sufficient supplies are available before the festival begins.
Representatives of kite flyers welcomed the decision to issue manufacturing licenses ahead of time. They said early approvals could help prevent shortages that affected citizens during this year’s celebrations.
Kite flyers’ leader Khawaja Nadeem Wain said manufacturers would require at least four months to produce enough kites and strings. He stressed that timely licensing would give manufacturers sufficient time to prepare stocks.
The representatives also called for appropriate safety measures during the festival. They particularly highlighted the need to protect children during Basant celebrations across the city.
Basant is traditionally associated with colourful kites, decorated rooftops and large public gatherings in Lahore. The festival has remained an important part of the city’s cultural identity despite years of restrictions and safety concerns.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif had earlier announced the dates for Basant Lahore 2027. The festival is scheduled to take place from March 12 to March 14.
In an online post, Maryam Nawaz said the dates were finalised after the successful Basant 2026 celebrations. She also invited people from across Pakistan to attend the event.
The invitation also extends to overseas Pakistanis and international visitors. The provincial government is seeking to present Basant Lahore as a major cultural event with international appeal.
The preparations are beginning months before the scheduled festival. Authorities are focusing on decoration plans, kite and string supplies, licensing and safety arrangements.
The early planning could also help manufacturers and traders prepare for increased demand. Kite flyers have previously raised concerns about shortages when supplies were not prepared sufficiently in advance.
Safety is expected to remain a key part of the preparations. Officials and kite-flying representatives are likely to focus on measures aimed at preventing accidents during the celebrations.
With Basant Lahore 2027 scheduled for March, Lahore is expected to see preparations intensify in the coming months. The government’s stated aim is to organise a large-scale festival while maintaining public safety.
