Punjab has approved fresh hiring of School Teacher Interns (STIs) against vacant positions across the province. The decision was announced by the Punjab School Education Department through a notification issued on September 25, 2026.
Under the new decision, district education authorities have been directed to begin the recruitment process. The hiring will be carried out under the School Teacher Internship (STI) Program, 2024.
The department has also approved new agreements for STIs who are already working in schools. These interns will be allowed to continue their services under the approved arrangements.
According to the notification, existing STIs can continue their services from August 24, 2026, until May 31, 2027. The department has directed authorities to complete the required formalities for their continuation.
At the same time, vacant STI positions will be filled through fresh recruitment. District authorities will follow the eligibility requirements and selection criteria already defined under the STI Program, 2024.
The number of new positions will depend on vacant slots in different districts. District-wise allocations have also been attached to the department’s notification.
The Punjab School Education Department has instructed Chief Executive Officers of District Education Authorities to take immediate action. They have also been asked to follow all applicable terms and conditions.
The authorities must submit compliance reports to the department after implementing the decision. The department has marked the recruitment process as a priority.
The latest move is expected to provide additional teaching support in government schools. It will also create temporary teaching opportunities for eligible candidates.
The STI programme is designed to provide temporary teaching services at different school levels. Official programme documents cover primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary placements.
Under the programme rules, STI placements are temporary and depend on the academic session or the arrival of a regular teacher. The placement can also end earlier under specified conditions.
The official guidelines also state that STI placements do not create a right to permanent employment. Selected candidates are placed at specific schools according to the programme’s requirements.
The fresh hiring decision comes as the Punjab government continues efforts to provide teaching support in public schools. Earlier reports also said the STI programme was intended to address teacher shortages.
Candidates interested in the new vacancies will need to follow the recruitment process announced by their respective district education authorities. Details such as available positions and district allocations will determine the opportunities in each area.
With the latest approval, Punjab has now opened the way for both the continuation of existing interns and fresh hiring against vacant positions.
