The Islamabad Police have requested Rs. 1 billion from the Ministry of Interior. The funds are meant to cover security expenses linked to upcoming protests in the capital.
Sources in the federal administration said the request covers expenses linked to PTI and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) activities. Both groups have announced protests and marches toward Islamabad.
The requested amount will cover the rental of more than 1,200 containers. These containers are being used for security arrangements at different locations.
The funds will also cover accommodation for police officers and personnel deployed for security duties. Meals for more than 29,000 personnel are included in the estimated expenses.
The Islamabad Police have also requested funds for additional security equipment. This includes sandbags, tear gas guns, and tear gas shells.
Part of the amount is also expected to cover petrol expenses. These supplies are being arranged as part of the broader security preparations.
Security arrangements have been strengthened across Islamabad ahead of the planned demonstrations. More than 1,000 containers have already been brought into the capital.
Recent reports indicate that security preparations have expanded beyond the initial deployment. Islamabad Police have sought additional personnel and anti-riot equipment from other provinces.
According to a separate report, police requested 16,000 personnel from Punjab. Another 2,000 personnel were requested from Sindh.
The security plan also includes accommodation and transportation arrangements. Several buildings and educational institutions have reportedly been identified for police accommodation.
The authorities are preparing for PTI’s planned long march and sit-in on September 27. The party has announced the protest as part of its political campaign.
Jamaat-e-Islami has also been mobilising supporters toward Islamabad. Its campaign focuses on the petroleum levy and fuel prices.
The government has increased security preparations as both political activities coincide. Authorities have reviewed arrangements at major entry and exit points.
Containers have been positioned at several important routes and sensitive locations. Officials are also monitoring traffic and emergency response arrangements.
The Islamabad Police have previously asked citizens not to believe unverified reports about complete road closures. Officials said routes remained open while preparations continued.
The latest funding request comes amid wider concerns about the cost of the planned demonstrations. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has estimated potential economic losses from disruptions.
He said protests, sit-ins, and road closures could result in losses of around Rs. 120 billion daily. The estimate includes potential disruptions across several economic sectors.
The government has also urged political groups to avoid disrupting public movement. Authorities have referred to recent court directions concerning road blockages.
Meanwhile, security officials are continuing preparations ahead of September 27. The Islamabad Police are expected to coordinate with other law enforcement agencies during the protests.
The requested Rs. 1 billion would therefore cover several operational requirements. These include personnel support, accommodation, food, transportation, containers, fuel, and security equipment.
