PM Shehbaz Flies to Qatar After Former Emir's Death

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif left for Qatar on Monday to express condolences following the death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. During the visit, he will meet Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and convey Pakistan’s sympathies to the Qatari royal family and people during their time of grief.

The visit reflects the close and longstanding brotherly relations between Pakistan and Qatar. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Information Minister Atta Tarar are accompanying the prime minister on the official visit, highlighting the importance Pakistan attaches to its relationship with the Gulf nation.

Pakistan has declared July 13 as a national day of mourning in honour of the late former Qatari leader. The decision was announced through a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, recognizing Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s contributions and expressing solidarity with the people of Qatar.

According to the official notification, national flags will remain at half-mast on government buildings across Pakistan throughout the day. The gesture reflects the country’s respect for the late leader and its support for the Qatari leadership and citizens during this period of mourning.

The Government of Pakistan said it shares the grief of the Qatari leadership, the royal family and the people of Qatar. It expressed heartfelt condolences and full sympathy, reaffirming the strong friendship and cooperation that have long existed between the two countries.

Pakistan also paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani for his significant role in transforming Qatar into a modern and influential nation. Officials acknowledged his leadership in promoting the country’s development, strengthening stability and enhancing Qatar’s growing presence on the international stage.

The visit is expected to further reinforce diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Qatar. Both countries have maintained close cooperation in trade, investment, energy and labour over the years, with regular high-level exchanges reflecting their strong bilateral partnership.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit underscores Pakistan’s commitment to standing with Qatar during a difficult time while reaffirming the deep historical, political and economic ties that continue to strengthen relations between the two friendly nations.
