Noreen Niazi, the sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, has reportedly been shifted from Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore to a hospital after her health deteriorated during detention.
Her lawyer, Rana Mudassar Umar, said that Niazi was taken to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology following a decline in her health while she was in custody. He shared the information on social media and appealed to the public to pray for her recovery.
The lawyer described the 70-year-old Niazi’s detention as illegal. He also claimed that her family was not informed about her transfer to the hospital.
No further details about her medical condition, the reason for her hospitalisation or her current health status were provided in the statement.
Lawyer Raises Concerns Over Hospital Transfer
According to Rana Mudassar Umar, Noreen Niazi’s health worsened while she was being held at Kot Lakhpat Jail. She was subsequently moved to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology for medical attention.
The lawyer expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the transfer, particularly the reported lack of communication with her family.
However, the available statement did not provide details about the treatment she is receiving or whether doctors have issued an update on her condition.
Further information from hospital authorities or the relevant government departments would be needed to establish the full circumstances of her hospitalisation.
Detention of Imran Khan’s Sisters Extended
Noreen Niazi’s hospitalisation comes amid ongoing legal proceedings concerning the detention of Imran Khan’s three sisters.
Earlier this week, the Lahore High Court disposed of a petition seeking their release after the Punjab government informed the court that their detention had been extended for another 30 days.
During the hearing, an assistant advocate general told Justice Abher Gul Khan that the provincial authorities had approved an additional month of detention for Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi.
According to the government’s representative, the decision followed a recommendation from the Lahore deputy commissioner. A report submitted on behalf of the provincial home secretary also informed the court that the latest detention orders had been issued on October 7.
The petition was disposed of after the government presented its position regarding the extended detention orders.
Why Were the Three Sisters Arrested?
Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were taken into custody in September as PTI prepared for a planned protest march towards Islamabad.
Their detention was ordered under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960. The initial orders were issued for 30 days.
According to the petitioner’s counsel during an earlier hearing, Aleema Khan’s detention was scheduled to end on October 19, while the detention periods for Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were due to expire on October 20.
The provincial government subsequently approved a further 30 days of detention, extending the period during which the three sisters would remain in custody.
Questions Remain Over Noreen Niazi’s Health
Noreen Niazi’s reported transfer to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology has raised further questions about her medical condition and the arrangements surrounding her detention.
Her lawyer has alleged that her family was not informed about the transfer and has called for prayers for her recovery. However, details about the severity of her condition and her treatment remain unavailable.
The development adds another turn to the ongoing legal and political situation surrounding Imran Khan’s family and the detention of his sisters.
Further updates from the family, legal representatives, hospital authorities or the Punjab government are expected to clarify her condition and the circumstances of her hospitalisation.
