Mobile Services Suspended Amid Muharram Security Arrangements

Mobile phone services were temporarily suspended in Quetta on Tuesday as authorities implemented strict security measures for the observance of 7th Muharram.

According to officials from the Balochistan Home Department, the decision was taken to strengthen security during Muharram processions and Majalis being held across the provincial capital. Authorities said the precautionary measure was necessary to ensure public safety and prevent any potential security threats during the religious events.

Sources stated that mobile services would remain unavailable until later in the evening. The main procession marking 7th Muharram is expected to take place during the day, with security personnel deployed at key locations throughout the city. Law enforcement agencies have established extensive security arrangements along the designated route to facilitate the peaceful movement of mourners.

To further enhance safety, authorities have ordered the closure of markets and commercial establishments situated along the procession route. The restrictions are intended to reduce congestion, improve crowd management, and help security officials maintain order during the event.

In a related development, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has completed preparations for Ashura security across the province. Officials have approved a detailed security strategy for the 9th and 10th of Muharram, focusing on the protection of religious gatherings and mourning processions.

As part of the plan, mobile phone services will be suspended in selected areas considered sensitive, while partial restrictions may be enforced in other locations. Security officials believe these measures will assist authorities in monitoring the situation more effectively and minimizing security risks during the observance of Muharram.

Authorities have identified approximately 400 Imambargahs as sensitive or highly sensitive locations requiring additional protection. Similarly, 286 mourning processions have been categorized as highly sensitive, while another 190 processions have been placed in the sensitive category.

Officials emphasized that the comprehensive security arrangements are aimed at ensuring a peaceful Muharram, safeguarding participants, and maintaining law and order throughout the province during the important religious observances.
