Messi’s Final Argentina Appearance
Lionel Messi ended his extraordinary international career with a goal and two assists as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 in a friendly match.
The 39-year-old captain made his final appearance for Argentina in front of more than 85,000 fans at the Monumental Stadium. The occasion turned into a major national celebration as supporters gathered to honour one of the most successful players in the country’s history.
Argentina’s iconic blue and white colours were displayed across the capital, while fireworks and a special tribute were held at the stadium.
Messi Emotional During Farewell
Messi struggled to hold back his emotions as he reflected on more than two decades with the national team. His family watched from the stands alongside members of Argentina’s World Cup-winning teams from 1978, 1986 and 2022.
The Argentina captain also remembered his late father during his farewell. Messi said representing Argentina had been a huge source of pride and described wearing the national shirt as one of the most beautiful experiences of his life.
Thousands of supporters also lined the team’s route before the match. In Messi’s hometown of Rosario, a huge No. 10 shirt carrying the word “Gracias” was displayed as part of the farewell celebrations.
Messi Stars in Final Match
The first half ended without a goal, but Messi played a key role after the break.
He provided the assist for Nicolas Otamendi to score Argentina’s opening goal. Otamendi, who had shared 17 years with Messi in the national team, was also bringing his international career to an end.
Messi then set up Nico Paz for Argentina’s second goal. Paz is among the young players viewed as a potential successor to Messi as Argentina’s next No. 10.
Messi completed the fairytale ending by converting a penalty to make it 3-0. The goal took his international tally to 126 goals.
Messi Leaves Historic Legacy
After the final whistle, Argentina and Benin players, along with the referee, gathered around Messi for emotional embraces. A drone show and musical tribute followed as fans celebrated his career.
Messi leaves international football as Argentina’s most-capped player with 208 appearances and its record goalscorer.
His career with Argentina included years of disappointment before he finally led the team to major international success. He won the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, cementing his place in Argentina’s football history.
For more than 20 years, Argentina expected Messi to deliver on the international stage. In his final appearance, the country simply celebrated his service and said goodbye to its iconic No. 10.
