Latest Remarks By Sheikh Rasheed Over 9 may events

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, the former interior minister and leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML), expressed his disapproval of the events that occurred on May 9 and disclosed that he had consistently advised Imran Khan, the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former prime minister, to maintain positive relations with the military.

When asked about his absence from the political scene after May 9, he explained that he had embarked on a 40-day spiritual retreat called a ‘Chilla.’

Sheikh Rasheed mentioned his participation in a National Security Committee (NSC) meeting focused on encryption. He noted that three individuals were negotiating with the army on behalf of the PTI chairman, and these individuals have since formed their own political parties. Furthermore, he revealed that Imran Khan had twice instructed them to refrain from negotiating with the army.

The former minister clarified that he was out of the country during the events of May 9 and 10 but had previously expressed his condemnation of the incidents that occurred on both days. He did, however, acknowledge the significant role played by non-political figures in the May 9 events.

Sheikh Rasheed emphasized that it is inappropriate for a politician to criticize a member of the armed forces. He expressed pride in considering himself a ‘spokesperson’ for the armed forces.

He also stressed the importance of collaboration between politicians and institutions, asserting that the country cannot function without these key institutions.
