The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced plans to introduce the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2026. The revised curriculum will apply to classes 9 to 12 from the 2027 academic year.
Under the new policy, all schools across the province must use approved textbooks. Both public and private educational institutions will have to follow the updated requirements.
The Directorate of Curriculum and Teacher Education has issued instructions for implementing the revised curriculum. Meanwhile, the KP Private Schools Regulatory Authority has directed private schools to ensure compliance.
The decision will bring changes to teaching materials and examination systems across the province. Schools, textbook publishers, and educational boards must prepare for the new academic requirements.
Subjects Included in the National Curriculum 2026
The revised curriculum will cover several compulsory academic subjects for secondary and higher secondary students.
The subjects included for classes 9 to 12 are:
- English
- Urdu
- Mathematics
- Computer Science
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Physics
General Science will also be included in the revised syllabus. However, this subject will apply only to classes 9 and 10.
Schools must ensure that their teaching materials follow the approved curriculum. The updated syllabus will provide the academic framework for students across the specified grade levels.
KP Textbook Board to Prepare Revised Textbooks
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board will prepare new textbooks or revise existing educational materials. All books must follow the requirements of the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2026.
However, textbooks cannot be distributed without prior approval. The Directorate of Curriculum and Teacher Education must review and approve them first.
This requirement will apply to all textbooks prepared or revised under the new curriculum. It aims to ensure that educational materials meet the prescribed academic standards.
Additionally, all educational boards in KP will conduct examinations according to the revised syllabus. Students will therefore be assessed under the updated curriculum from the 2027 academic year.
Private Schools Directed to Follow New Curriculum
The KP Private Schools Regulatory Authority has instructed private school principals to implement the revised curriculum.
School administrations must carefully review the issued instructions. They must also complete the necessary changes before the 2027 academic year begins.
The directives make approved textbooks mandatory for private educational institutions. Schools must update their teaching materials according to the new requirements.
This implementation will involve coordination between school administrations, textbook publishers, and education authorities.
Legal Action for Non-Compliance
Authorities have warned schools and other concerned organisations against ignoring the new requirements.
Educational institutions failing to follow the directives could face legal action. The government will enforce the requirements under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Supervision of Curricula, Textbooks and Maintenance of Standards of Education Act, 2011.
The legislation provides a legal framework for monitoring curricula and maintaining educational standards.
The decision will require schools, publishers, and textbook boards to update their academic materials. Educational boards must also align their examination systems with the revised syllabus.
