Former federal minister Khawaja Saad Rafique has called for major reforms within Pakistan’s political parties. He urged parties to allow members greater freedom to express their views.
Rafique criticized the practice of creating “yes men and mirasis” within political organizations. He said party members should not be expected to blindly praise their leadership.
He stressed the need to strengthen internal democratic institutions. According to Rafique, political parties should create an environment where members can disagree without fear.
Rafique said people who have remained associated with a political party for decades should have the right to speak openly. He added that party leadership should also listen to different opinions.
He also criticized the growing culture of political accusations and personal attacks. Rafique said ordinary citizens are more concerned about their daily difficulties.
According to him, people want justice, economic stability and solutions to their problems. Political leaders should therefore focus more on public issues than personal disputes.
Rafique emphasized the importance of consultation within political parties. He said stronger internal democracy could help political organizations make better decisions.
He also called for an empowered local government system with constitutional protection. He proposed giving provincial finance commissions a status similar to the National Finance Commission.
Rafique further said creating smaller provinces alone would not resolve Pakistan’s challenges. He argued that the country must address the concentration of political and administrative power.
He also warned that political parties could lose public relevance if they fail to reform themselves. He stressed the importance of improving political institutions and internal party structures.
Rafique called for greater acceptance of electoral results as well. He said political parties should expand their consultation process before making important decisions.
He argued that decision-making should not remain limited to a small group of individuals. Broader participation could help strengthen political organizations and improve public confidence.
Rafique also criticized the existing electoral system. He said the current structure makes it difficult for middle-class candidates to enter parliament.
He called for credible election institutions and an electoral process free from interference. He said transparent elections are important for strengthening democratic institutions.
Rafique’s remarks also highlighted concerns about the future of political parties. He warned that younger generations may eventually demand major changes.
He said political and institutional failures could create pressure that becomes difficult for political parties and state institutions to manage.
His comments focused on the need for stronger internal democracy and political reform. He also stressed that ending the Mirasi Culture requires greater freedom of expression within political parties.

According to Rafique, political organizations should encourage debate rather than discourage disagreement. Ending the Mirasi Culture could help parties develop stronger institutions and more effective leadership.
