Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has laid the foundation stone for a Rs. 2 billion development package aimed at upgrading infrastructure in the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE), one of the city’s largest industrial zones.
The project is part of the Sindh government’s broader plan to improve industrial infrastructure across Karachi and enhance facilities for businesses operating in the city’s key manufacturing hubs.
Major Infrastructure Improvements Planned
According to officials, the development package includes the rehabilitation of major roads, drainage networks, sewerage systems, green belts, and other municipal infrastructure within the SITE industrial area.
The initiative is expected to improve transportation, reduce flooding and drainage issues, and create a better working environment for industries and businesses operating in the estate.
Rs. 9.5 Billion Approved for Industrial Areas
Speaking at the foundation stone ceremony, Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the Sindh government has approved and released Rs. 9.5 billion for the rehabilitation of industrial areas across Karachi.
He explained that the funds will be used to improve infrastructure in multiple industrial zones, helping address long-standing issues affecting businesses and economic activity.
Trade Associations to Oversee Projects
The mayor said the government has introduced a new development model by giving trade and industrial associations a greater role in project execution.
Under the revised system, trade associations will identify priority development projects, select contractors, and determine the construction materials required for each scheme.
According to Wahab, this approach will ensure that projects are tailored to the actual needs of industrial areas while also improving transparency and accelerating implementation.
He noted that the previous system often delayed development work, whereas involving industry representatives directly is expected to deliver faster and more practical results.
Provincial and Local Governments Working Together
Mayor Wahab said the Sindh government and local administration are working closely to remove obstacles that have historically slowed development projects across Karachi.
He emphasized that improving industrial infrastructure remains essential for supporting economic growth, attracting investment, and enhancing the city’s overall business environment.
TP-1 Sewage Treatment Plant Nears Launch
During the ceremony, the mayor also announced that the TP-1 Sewage Treatment Plant will soon become operational.
The facility will initially have a treatment capacity of 35 million gallons per day (MGD).
He added that another 65 MGD of treatment capacity is expected to be added by December, increasing the city’s additional sewage treatment capacity to 100 MGD.
The expansion is expected to improve wastewater management and contribute to a cleaner urban environment while supporting industrial and residential areas.
The latest infrastructure package reflects the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to modernize Karachi’s industrial zones and strengthen the city’s economic backbone through improved roads, drainage, and public utilities.
