K-Electric (KE) has warned that Karachi may face load management during evening and nighttime peak hours due to a shortage of re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG). The power utility said global supply disruptions and delayed LNG cargo deliveries have affected electricity generation across Pakistan.
KE spokesperson Imran Rana said the utility might introduce load management as a last-resort measure if the shortage makes it necessary. He added that electricity supply during daytime hours was expected to remain largely stable.
The warning comes as Pakistan faces uncertainty over its energy supplies amid international disruptions. Since RLNG is used for power generation, reduced availability can affect the amount of electricity supplied to the national grid and distribution companies.
KE Coordinates With Authorities
Rana said K-Electric was coordinating with Pakistan LNG Limited and other relevant authorities to address the RLNG shortage and reduce its impact on consumers.
The spokesperson also apologised to customers for the possible inconvenience. He indicated that load management would only be considered if required during periods of high electricity demand.
The utility has not announced a confirmed schedule for load shedding. Any changes to electricity supply will depend on the availability of fuel and the overall power generation situation.
Pakistan Faced Similar Shortages Earlier
Pakistan experienced a similar situation earlier this year when limited RLNG availability contributed to power shortages and forced utilities to implement load management in different parts of the country.
In August, the government apologised to consumers and said it would work to reduce load shedding once delayed LNG cargoes arrived.
The latest warning has raised concerns among Karachi residents, particularly those who rely on uninterrupted electricity during evening and nighttime hours. However, daytime supply is expected to remain largely stable, according to KE.
Winter LNG Supply Plan Under Preparation
Meanwhile, authorities are working to finalise Pakistan’s LNG import plan for the three winter months from December through February. Securing sufficient supplies has become more challenging amid international market uncertainty and disruptions linked to the US-Iran conflict.
Winter demand for gas typically increases as households and businesses require more fuel for heating and other needs. Ensuring adequate LNG supplies is therefore important for managing both gas demand and electricity generation.
The final import arrangements and availability of LNG cargoes could influence Pakistan’s energy supply during the coming months.
For now, K-Electric has warned of possible load management rather than confirming widespread nighttime power cuts. Consumers should follow official updates from the utility for any announcements about electricity supply in their areas.
