Italy Raises Financial Requirement for International Student Study Visa

Italy has updated its financial requirements for international students applying for study visas. The new rule affects students planning to enroll in universities under a national Type D visa.

According to the latest official guidelines published on the Universitaly portal, Italy now requires students to show at least €10,179.85 per year. This applies for the academic years 2026–2027 and 2027–2028.

The Universitaly portal is the official platform of the Ministry of University and Research in Italy. It is used for pre-enrollment and visa-related procedures for international students.

Under the new rules, students must submit bank statements showing sufficient financial support. The amount is roughly €10,000 or more per year. For Pakistani students, this equals around Rs. 3.2 million, depending on exchange rates.

This is a major increase compared to the earlier requirement of around €6,000. The updated policy confirms a stricter financial proof standard for studying in Italy.

Officials in Italy have also stated that funds must come from legal and traceable sources. Embassies may check the origin of the money during the visa process.

The financial support can be in the student’s own bank account. It can also come from family members, including close relatives up to the fourth degree.

Authorities may review bank activity, income details, and financial background. This is to ensure that the funds are genuine and stable.

Scholarships may also be considered in some cases. However, students must provide official proof that the scholarship has been awarded. Simply applying for one is not enough.

Even if a student is admitted to a university in Italy, visa approval is not guaranteed. The final decision remains with the Italian embassy or consulate.

Embassies will also assess other factors. These include academic history, financial stability, and migration risk.

For students planning to study in Italy, proper documentation is now more important than ever. Bank statements must clearly match family income and financial records.

Applicants are advised to carefully prepare all documents before applying. They should also check updates from the Italian Embassy and Universitaly portal regularly.
