Under the new directives, every market, retail outlet, and shopping mall in Islamabad must close by 8:00 PM. Officials said the decision is intended to support energy-saving initiatives while maintaining normal business activity during daytime hours.
The revised policy provides some flexibility for food-related businesses. Restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, and similar establishments will be permitted to continue operations until 10:00 PM. Authorities believe this arrangement will help meet public needs while still contributing to overall energy conservation goals.
The new regulations also cover event venues. Marriage halls, marquees, and other locations hosting social gatherings will now be required to conclude their activities by 10:00 PM. The administration stated that these measures are part of a broader strategy to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency.
Despite the restrictions, several essential services have been exempted from the updated market timings. Pharmacies, hospitals, petrol stations, and dairy shops will continue operating according to their existing schedules to ensure uninterrupted access to critical services.
In addition, businesses that serve international markets or provide specialized services have also been excluded from the new rules. Sports facilities, call centers, and information technology companies catering to overseas clients will be allowed to maintain their regular operating hours.
Officials emphasized that the revised market schedule is being implemented under the government’s austerity framework and is designed to balance energy conservation with economic activity. Authorities added that the exemptions were carefully selected to avoid disruptions in healthcare, transportation, and sectors that contribute significantly to the economy.
The administration has urged business owners and venue operators to comply with the new regulations. Relevant departments will monitor implementation to ensure that the revised market closing times and operational guidelines are followed throughout the capital.
The measures reflect Islamabad’s continued efforts to reduce energy consumption while ensuring that essential public services and key industries remain fully operational.
