Police have detained Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan, sisters of PTI founder Imran Khan, ahead of the party’s planned September 27 protest. The development came a day after Aleema Khan was detained under Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960. Recent reports confirm that Aleema was ordered to remain in detention for 30 days and was shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.
Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan were subsequently transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail, according to reports. Aleema Khan’s son, Sher Shah, and another family member, Shahrez, were also reported to have been taken into custody. Authorities have cited concerns about public order in connection with the detentions.
The action follows an order issued by Lahore Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Ijaz on September 20. The order directed that Aleema Khan be detained for 30 days under the Punjab MPO Ordinance. The stated grounds included concerns about public safety and the possible impact of the upcoming PTI protest and march towards Islamabad.
The September 27 protest has become the focus of heightened security preparations in Islamabad. According to reports, authorities are reinforcing containers around major roads and the Red Zone, while additional defensive arrangements are being made at entry points. Reports also say soil-filled bags are being used to strengthen barriers, while further measures are being considered to restrict movement towards sensitive areas.
The government has said it will take measures to maintain public order ahead of the planned protest. PTI, meanwhile, has described the detentions as part of actions being taken against its members and supporters ahead of the march. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has said the party intends its protest to remain peaceful and political.
The detentions and security preparations have added to political tensions ahead of September 27. Further developments are expected as authorities continue preparations for the planned protest and legal proceedings concerning those detained move forward.
