The government has announced plans to provide further relief to the public amid ongoing energy challenges. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to protect vulnerable groups and prepare a gas supply plan for winter.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar shared these details during a press conference. He said the prime minister understood the financial difficulties faced by ordinary citizens.
Tarar stated that Rs. 15 billion in refinery profits had been transferred to the public. He also claimed that profiteering by a small group in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sector had been stopped.
Government Uses Funds to Manage Energy Challenges
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the ongoing conflict began on February 28. He added that Pakistan continued to face difficulties because of the situation.
Malik noted that international oil prices had declined. He expressed hope that further positive developments would provide relief to consumers.
The minister said some individuals had attempted to benefit from public difficulties. He also accused certain groups of seeking excessive profits during the crisis.
According to Malik, oil refineries provided financial support to the country. The federal government also spent Rs. 130 billion from its resources to manage the situation.
He said some traders had taken advantage of consumers in the LPG market. The government would ensure that any reduction in petroleum prices reached customers.
Prime Minister Monitoring Energy Security
Malik said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was personally supervising energy security arrangements. The government would also explore expensive fuel supplies if necessary.
The minister added that officials were working to maintain gas availability during meal times. This measure aims to help households manage their daily cooking needs during winter.
He also said subsidised petrol had already been provided to 15 million people. The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to support consumers facing financial pressure.
Government Plans Changes in LPG Market
The petroleum minister discussed the existing LPG policy and market structure. He said the policy was introduced in 2016.
Malik claimed that a cartel had operated in the LPG sector for around 50 years. He said this arrangement had allowed a small group to earn billions of rupees.
The government plans to dismantle the existing quota system. Companies will instead be directed to sell locally produced LPG through auctions.
Around eight companies are expected to participate in these auctions. The proposed system aims to change how locally produced LPG is distributed and sold.
Winter Gas Supply Plan Also in Focus
The government has also been directed to prepare a winter gas supply strategy. Officials are expected to focus on providing gas during household meal times.
The announced measures cover petroleum prices, LPG distribution and winter gas availability. However, rising household expenses remain a concern for many families.
