Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari has said that Electricity Prices in Pakistan are expected to decrease significantly in the coming period. He made the statement during a conference in Lahore via video link.
He said the government is introducing major reforms in the power sector. These reforms aim to improve efficiency and reduce long-term energy costs for consumers.
According to him, the future structure of Electricity Prices will be more affordable and flexible. Consumers may even be able to store electricity during the day and use it at night.
The minister added that Independent Power Producers (IPPs) will no longer be part of future expansion plans. He said the government has moved away from the IPP-based business model.
He also stated that plans to add 10,000 megawatts through IPP agreements have been stopped. This shift is part of a broader energy reform strategy.
The focus is now shifting towards privatization and smart metering systems. The government also wants private companies to bring modern solutions into the energy sector.
Awais Leghari said Electricity Prices will be adjusted for different sectors. Industrial and agricultural consumers may benefit from separate tariff structures.
He mentioned that off-peak rates during daytime hours could be reduced to around 6 to 7 rupees per unit. This would help lower costs for specific consumer groups.
The minister also highlighted issues in the current billing system. He said faulty electricity meters often remain in use for long periods.
This leads to incorrect billing and increases financial pressure on consumers. The government is working to remove such defective systems.
Leghari added that improvements in meter procurement have already created savings. These savings are part of the broader effort to stabilize Electricity Prices.
He further stated that electricity distribution companies are expected to be privatized within the next one to two years. This move is aimed at improving service delivery and efficiency.
Officials believe that these reforms will help reduce long-term energy costs. They also expect better transparency in billing and distribution.
