The government has increased the price of high-speed diesel by Rs. 1.39 per liter. The new price came into effect on August 12.
Following the increase, the price of high-speed diesel has reached Rs. 382.25 per liter. It was previously available at Rs. 380.86 per liter.
The latest increase comes despite a slight decline in the ex-refinery price. The ex-refinery price dropped by Rs. 0.61 per liter.
It has decreased from Rs. 280.44 to Rs. 279.83 per liter. However, the lower ex-refinery price did not reduce the final retail price.
The main reason behind the increase is a higher petroleum levy. The government raised the levy on diesel by Rs. 2 per liter.
The petroleum levy has increased from Rs. 74.28 to Rs. 76.28 per liter. This increase more than offset the decline in the ex-refinery price.
Other components of the diesel price have remained unchanged. The dealer margin continues to stand at Rs. 8.64 per liter.
Similarly, the oil marketing company margin remains unchanged. It is currently set at Rs. 7.87 per liter.
The inland freight equalization margin has also remained stable. It continues to stand at Rs. 4.63 per liter.
The latest adjustment has pushed diesel prices significantly higher compared with last year. On August 16, 2025, diesel was priced at Rs. 272.99 per liter.
The current price represents an increase of around 40 percent compared with that level. The higher cost could increase transportation expenses across the country.
Diesel is widely used by commercial vehicles, buses, trucks, and various industries. Changes in its price can affect transportation and supply costs.
Higher transport costs may also influence the prices of goods moved across the country. Businesses could face additional expenses if fuel costs remain elevated.
The latest adjustment reflects the impact of government levies on petroleum prices. It also shows how retail fuel prices can rise despite lower international-linked costs.
