Viral claims about a massive border crisis between Spain and Morocco have triggered widespread debate on social media after reports suggested that around 60,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta before voluntarily returning to Morocco on the same day.
The claims quickly gained traction online, with many users alleging that the incident was part of a politically motivated stunt involving US far-right politicians and Israel. However, no official evidence has been presented to support these allegations.
The controversy intensified after several Israeli politicians commented on the situation on X (formerly Twitter), while social media users linked the incident to broader geopolitical tensions and immigration debates.
US Congressman Thomas Massie also weighed in on the issue, criticizing fellow Republican lawmakers over what he described as contradictory positions on Morocco and Spain.
In a post on X, Massie said that only weeks earlier, nearly every Republican had voted in favor of language recognizing Spain-administered Ceuta and Melilla as being located in Moroccan territory.
“Every Republican except me voted for it, but now THEY are acting shocked at the invasion,” Massie wrote.
The statement referred to language included in a US congressional committee document that expressed support for Morocco’s territorial claim over the Spanish enclaves.
However, the committee document does not transfer sovereignty or change the legal status of Ceuta and Melilla. The two cities remain autonomous Spanish territories, and the report merely reflects the position taken within a congressional document rather than any binding policy decision.
The alleged movement of 60,000 migrants has also become the subject of intense online speculation, with some users questioning the authenticity of the reports and others arguing that the incident has been exaggerated for political purposes.
US President Donald Trump also referenced the situation while discussing immigration, presenting it as another example of the challenges posed by large-scale migration across different regions of the world.
Despite the widespread discussion, officials have not confirmed claims that the border situation was orchestrated or linked to any coordinated political operation.
The incident has once again highlighted how quickly unverified claims can spread online, particularly when they intersect with politically sensitive issues such as migration, border security, and international relations.
As of now, no official investigation has concluded that the reported events were staged or connected to the actors named in the viral allegations.
