Islamabad police announced on Monday that the individual discovered hanging from a bridge in the federal capital was “mentally ill.” This statement follows the grim discovery of a body by residents in Islamabad’s Faisal Avenue area, which had gone unnoticed for several hours due to dense fog.

The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Umar Shaham, son of Umar Bahadur, based on documents retrieved from the body. Although an Islamabad resident, Umar hailed from Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), according to the initial reports.

The police, while acknowledging the incident’s apparent nature as a suicide, stated that further investigation is underway with the assistance of the victim’s family. The investigation officer’s (IO) report indicated, “A dead body hanging from a bridge, in an incident that seems to be suicide, was discovered within the Aabpara Police Station’s jurisdiction […] and the deceased has been shifted to the PIMS hospital.”

Emphasizing the potential prevention of such deaths with adequate attention to mental health, Islamabad police urged the public to be vigilant regarding individuals facing mental health issues and report any unusual activities through the ’15’ helpline.

In a separate incident earlier on the same day, Karachi police recovered five bodies from an apartment near Karachi’s Wireless Gate area. The deceased, identified as Syed Ahsan Raza Rizvi, allegedly committed suicide by hanging, having killed his wife and three children within the apartment.

A note discovered by the police, leading to a file saved on a laptop, revealed that financial woes drove Rizvi to choose, in his own words, the “easy option.” The tragic incident sheds light on the complex issue of mental health and its impact on individuals and families, prompting authorities to underscore the importance of mental health awareness and support.
