The University of Florida has announced a fully funded PhD opportunity in the United States for students interested in fisheries, ecology and aquatic sciences. Pakistani students are eligible to apply for the doctoral position, which is scheduled to begin in 2027.
The opportunity offers an annual stipend of $30,000 along with tuition coverage and other benefits. The application deadline is October 31, 2026, giving interested candidates a limited period to prepare and submit their applications.
The selected PhD student will conduct research in fisheries ecosystem modelling and quantitative analysis. The research will examine how fish populations and marine ecosystems respond to fishing activities and environmental changes.
The project may cover a range of areas, including climate change, habitat conditions, water quality, forage fisheries, harmful algal blooms, invasive species and fisheries productivity. The research is expected to contribute to fisheries management strategies in the Gulf of Mexico and the southeastern United States.
The selected student will join the University of Florida’s research environment and work with researchers connected to the UF/IFAS Nature Coast Biological Station. The student will pursue the PhD through either the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences or the School of Natural Resources and Environment.
In addition to the $30,000 annual stipend, the graduate assistantship includes tuition coverage and other benefits. Students will also receive access to the GatorGradCare health care plan, five days of paid leave per semester and a voluntary retirement program.
Applicants are expected to have an MS degree in biology, ecology, marine science, fisheries, oceanography, wildlife or a related field. The position is aimed at students interested in applying quantitative methods to fisheries ecosystem research.
Experience with ecosystem and food-web models, fish population dynamics, fisheries stock assessment, species distribution models and geospatial analysis is preferred. Familiarity with Ecopath with Ecosim and R statistical software is also listed among the preferred qualifications.
Applicants must also meet the English language requirements. The listed minimum scores are 6.5 in IELTS or 80 in TOEFL iBT.
Candidates are required to prepare a letter of interest, CV or resume, unofficial academic transcripts and contact information for two references. Applications can be submitted directly to Dr. David Chagaris at the University of Florida for consideration.
The PhD opportunity will provide selected students with research experience in fisheries ecosystem modelling, quantitative analysis and natural resource management. Students may also have opportunities to collaborate with University of Florida and NOAA researchers.
Pakistani students who meet the academic and research requirements can prepare their documents and apply before the October 31, 2026 deadline.
