UAE Experiences Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Across Cities

The United Arab Emirates experienced severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall this week, with lightning strikes intensifying the weather disturbance, as reported by the National Centre of Meteorology. The adverse weather conditions led to power disruptions in several areas due to the potent combination of rain and gusty winds. The cities of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah faced varying degrees of rainfall, impacting daily activities.

Social media was abuzz with videos capturing dramatic scenes, such as a significant lightning strike in Shakhbout City, Abu Dhabi, and large hailstones damaging vehicles. Given the severity of the weather, the government mandated remote work for its employees on April 16 and recommended safety measures for private sector outdoor activities.

To safeguard public safety, authorities in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah shut down all public parks and beaches. Educational institutions also closed temporarily due to the hazardous conditions.

The National Centre of Meteorology highlighted the unpredictable nature of the weather pattern, warning of potential flooding triggered by the combination of heavy rains, thunder, and lightning. They also cautioned that the strong winds could significantly reduce visibility, complicating travel and outdoor activities. These measures and advisories were all part of efforts to minimize the weather’s impact on residents and infrastructure.
