US President Donald Trump was met with loud boos from sections of the crowd as he joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino for the FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy ceremony at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.
The reaction came shortly after Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time to claim their second FIFA World Cup title.
Trump booed during trophy presentation
Trump and Infantino walked onto the field for the medal and trophy presentation following the final, prompting audible boos from spectators inside the stadium.
The crowd quietened as the ceremony progressed, with the two officials presenting medals to Spain and Argentina players and coaching staff.
Trump, who arrived at the stadium by helicopter, remained on the podium alongside Spain’s squad before stepping aside as captain Rodri lifted the World Cup trophy amid celebrations.
Earlier controversy during the tournament
Trump had already generated controversy earlier in the tournament after reportedly asking FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the red card shown to United States forward Folarin Balogun during a group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Balogun’s one-match suspension was subsequently lifted, allowing him to feature in the Round of 16 against Belgium, where the United States suffered a 4-1 defeat.
Tempers flare after final whistle
Emotions spilled over after the final whistle as players from both teams became involved in a brief confrontation.
The incident began when Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes shoved Spain’s Gavi to the ground while Spanish substitutes rushed onto the pitch to celebrate their victory.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni stepped in to calm the situation before it escalated further.
Earlier, midfielder Enzo Fernández had been sent off during second-half stoppage time, leaving Argentina to finish the match with 10 players.
Spain’s victory secured their second FIFA World Cup title and ended Argentina’s hopes of becoming the first men’s team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup crown.
