The Traffic Police in Punjab has clarified the minimum age requirements for different driving licenses. The guidance covers motorcycles, cars, commercial vehicles, and heavy transport vehicles.
The clarification explains the age limits for regular and commercial driving licenses. It also outlines separate requirements for teenagers seeking a juvenile driving permit.
According to the Traffic Police, applicants must be at least 18 years old for a motorcycle license. The same minimum age applies to a motor car or jeep license.
Applicants seeking a Light Transport Vehicle (LTV) license must be at least 21 years old. Higher requirements apply to those applying for Heavy Transport Vehicle (HTV) licenses.
Age Requirement for HTV Driving License
The minimum age for an HTV license is 22 years. However, applicants can also qualify through a previous license requirement.
An applicant may apply if they hold a Motor Car or LTV license for at least three years. This previous-license requirement is also included in guidance issued by traffic authorities in Rawalpindi and Faisalabad.
Applicants must meet the required age and experience conditions before applying for an HTV learner permit. These requirements are separate from those for standard motorcycle and car licenses.
The rules are intended to ensure that applicants have suitable driving experience before operating heavy vehicles.
Juvenile Driving Permit Available for Teenagers
Punjab also has a separate Juvenile Driving Permit for teenagers between 16 and 18 years old. The permit applies to motorcycles and scooters with engine capacities of up to 125cc.
The juvenile permit comes with specific conditions. Teenagers must provide a NADRA Smart Card or B-Form during the application process.
They must also obtain written permission from a parent or legal guardian. Applicants are required to pass traffic-sign and practical driving tests.
Helmet use is mandatory for teenagers using the juvenile permit. Authorities can also cancel the permit after serious or repeated traffic violations.
The permit provides limited driving permission for eligible teenagers. It does not replace the standard requirements for obtaining a regular motorcycle license.
Regular Motorcycle License Still Requires Age 18
The Traffic Police has made clear that the juvenile permit does not lower the minimum age for a regular motorcycle license.
Applicants must still be at least 18 years old to obtain a standard motorcycle license. The same minimum age applies to regular motor car and jeep licenses.
Teenagers who receive a juvenile permit must therefore follow its specific conditions. They cannot automatically obtain a regular motorcycle license before turning 18.
The different age limits apply according to the type of vehicle and license category. Applicants should meet the relevant requirements before beginning the licensing process.
Different Licenses Have Different Requirements
Punjab’s licensing system sets separate requirements for motorcycles, cars, LTVs, and HTVs. The age requirement increases for licenses involving larger or commercial vehicles.
The Traffic Police guidance also highlights the importance of previous driving experience for HTV applicants. This requirement applies alongside the relevant age condition.
For teenagers, the juvenile permit provides a separate option under specified conditions. However, it remains different from a regular driving license.
