Switzerland Edge Colombia on Penalties to Reach Historic Quarter-Final

Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, defeating Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Vancouver on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as Switzerland’s hero by saving a penalty from Cucho Hernández, while Davinson Sánchez struck the crossbar during the shootout. Ruben Vargas then calmly converted the decisive spot-kick to seal Switzerland’s place in the last eight.

The tightly contested match produced few clear chances during normal time. Colombia came closest in the first half when Gustavo Puerta forced an excellent diving save from Kobel, while Switzerland’s Fabian Rieder tested Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas from a narrow angle.

Switzerland nearly snatched victory in stoppage time when Dan Ndoye dragged his shot narrowly wide after a well-timed run.

In extra time, Colombia missed a golden opportunity as Jhon Lucumí headed against the crossbar from a corner, sending the match to penalties.

After the victory, Ruben Vargas said he was grateful for the moment and praised his teammates for their effort throughout the demanding 120-minute contest.

Switzerland entered the match without 20-year-old forward Johan Manzambi, who suffered a knee injury during training before the game. Manzambi had been one of the tournament’s standout performers, contributing three goals and two assists.

The defeat ends Colombia’s World Cup campaign as they fell short of reaching only the second quarter-final in their history. They arrived in Vancouver boasting one of the tournament’s strongest defensive records, having conceded just one goal before the knockout stage.

For Switzerland, the victory ends a frustrating run of four consecutive Round of 16 exits at the 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups. The Swiss will now face defending champions Argentina in the quarter-finals on July 12 in Kansas City.
