Strong Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alert Across Japan

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan on Tuesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Following the earthquake, authorities issued a tsunami alert, warning of waves reaching around one metre in height.

The earthquake was reported in Kumamoto Prefecture, where the shaking reached the highest level of seven on Japan’s Shindo intensity scale, which measures the strength of ground motion experienced in affected areas.

Despite the tsunami warning in Japan, officials confirmed there was no threat to Hawaii or American Samoa. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Honolulu, stated that the earthquake did not pose a danger to those regions.

Authorities continued monitoring the situation and advised residents in affected coastal areas to remain alert while assessments were carried out following the strong seismic activity.
