Spain secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a strong 3-0 win over Austria at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood.
Mikel Oyarzabal was the star of the match, scoring twice to guide Spain to an important victory. Spain controlled the game from the beginning and once again showed their defensive strength by keeping another clean sheet. The first goal came in the 36th minute when Oyarzabal finished a low cross from Marc Cucurella on the left side. It was his third goal of the tournament.
Spain doubled their lead in the 66th minute through Pedro Porro, who headed in a cross from Alex Baena at the back post. It was Porro’s first goal for Spain. Oyarzabal completed the win in the 89th minute, combining again with Cucurella before placing the ball into the bottom-right corner.
Spain dominated possession with 64.5% and had 10 shots on target from 23 attempts. Austria struggled badly in attack and failed to record a single shot on target.
Austria’s best chance came through Sasa Kalajdzic, but his header landed on top of the goal. The result is a big confidence boost for Spain after their goalless draw against Cape Verde earlier in the tournament. Spain will now prepare for a Round of 16 clash against Portugal.
Spain will also be encouraged by Lamine Yamal’s performance, as the 18-year-old looked sharp after recovering from a hamstring issue.
