Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced plans to provide free electric scooters to 50,000 women across the province as part of the government’s efforts to improve women’s mobility.
Speaking at a ceremony in Mirpurkhas during the distribution of pink electric scooters, Memon said the Sindh government would continue expanding the initiative to help women access affordable and convenient transportation. He said the program would eventually cover eligible women in every district of Sindh.
Under the initiative, electric scooters are being distributed to women who complete the required training and successfully pass their driving tests. The government has linked eligibility to driving skills and safety requirements.
Memon said the scooters were being distributed without political or other discrimination. According to him, women who meet the eligibility criteria and demonstrate the required driving skills can benefit from the program.
The minister also announced plans to introduce pink taxis for women. The proposed service is aimed at providing another transportation option for women and improving their ability to travel for work, education and other social activities.
Memon said the number of women obtaining driving licences had increased significantly in recent years. He attributed the change partly to greater acceptance among families of women riding motorcycles and using other forms of personal transportation.
The electric scooter initiative is expected to provide women with greater independence in daily travel. It could also help women who face transportation difficulties while commuting to educational institutions, workplaces and other destinations.
The government has emphasized that the scooters distributed under the program are exclusively for women. Memon warned that authorities would take action if the scooters were found being used by men.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to improve women’s access to transportation in Sindh. By expanding the electric scooter program and introducing pink taxis, the provincial government plans to create more transportation options specifically designed to support women’s mobility.
The government’s plan to distribute 50,000 electric scooters will now depend on the implementation of the program across different districts and the completion of required training and driving tests by eligible applicants.
