Shoaib Malik, former captain of Pakistan’s national team, has called on Maryam Nawaz to revise gym operating hours across Punjab.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Malik requested that fitness centers be allowed to remain open until 10 PM. He acknowledged the government’s decision to regulate business hours but stressed that gyms and health facilities should be treated differently due to their importance.
Respected CM @MaryamNSharif, while timely regulation of businesses is a welcome step, I reckon gyms and fitness centers deserve special consideration. Many office-goers work out after duty hours only. Health is as important as food, and extending gym timings to 22:00 as well…

Malik pointed out that many people with office jobs can only visit gyms after completing their workday. He emphasized that maintaining good health is just as essential as meeting daily nutritional needs, and limiting gym hours may prevent people from staying active. Extending operating hours, he argued, would give working individuals better access to fitness facilities and promote a healthier lifestyle across the province.
His appeal comes at a time when the Punjab government has introduced austerity measures under the directives of the chief minister. As part of these steps, a notification has been issued mandating that shops, markets, and shopping malls across the province, including Lahore, must close by 8 PM.
Malik’s suggestion highlights the need to balance economic policies with public health priorities. By allowing gyms to operate longer, he believes more citizens would be able to incorporate exercise into their daily routines, ultimately contributing to a fitter and healthier society.
