Punjab Issues Health Alert
The Punjab government has issued an alert to chief executive officers and medical superintendents across the province over COVID-19 and seasonal flu as respiratory illnesses become a concern with the changing weather.
Officials have been directed to remain vigilant and ensure that hospitals have adequate facilities available for patients. The government has warned that outpatient departments (OPDs) and other hospital wards could see an increase in patient numbers in the coming days.
Health authorities have also highlighted the risks associated with seasonal flu, particularly for pregnant women, elderly people and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses.
Citizens Advised to Take Precautions
The Punjab government has advised citizens to take basic precautions to reduce the spread of respiratory infections. People have been urged to wear masks, wash their hands regularly and avoid crowded places where possible.
The government has also recommended flu vaccination as an important preventive measure, particularly for pregnant women and elderly people.
Meanwhile, hospitals in Lahore are reportedly receiving more patients with symptoms including fever, persistent cough, breathing difficulties, body aches and other flu-like conditions. The increase has raised concerns about respiratory illnesses as temperatures and weather conditions change.
COVID-19 Cases Not Clearly Confirmed
The exact number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Punjab remains unclear. Reports indicate that government teaching hospitals are currently not conducting COVID-19 testing, making it difficult to establish how many patients with respiratory symptoms are actually infected with the coronavirus.
Claims that more than 2,000 patients were treated within 24 hours have not been independently verified. Health authorities have also not confirmed that all patients reporting flu-like or respiratory symptoms are suffering from COVID-19.
The symptoms being reported can also occur with seasonal influenza and other respiratory infections. Therefore, the reported increase in patients should not automatically be treated as a confirmed rise in coronavirus cases.
Experts Urge Public to Stay Alert
Health experts have advised people experiencing respiratory symptoms to maintain good hygiene and take precautions around others. Wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated places can help reduce the risk of spreading respiratory infections.
People have also been advised to seek medical attention if symptoms become severe, particularly when breathing difficulties or persistent fever develop.
The latest alert comes as hospitals prepare for a possible increase in patients with seasonal flu and other respiratory illnesses. Authorities have asked healthcare facilities across Punjab to remain prepared and ensure that patients can receive timely medical care.
