Punjab has recorded a 34% decline in fatal road accidents this year, according to a statement issued by Punjab Traffic Police on September 29, 2026.
The traffic police said a significant reduction in fatal crashes has been recorded across 26 districts of the province, attributing the improvement to enforcement measures, public awareness campaigns and greater attention to the causes of road accidents.
Major decline reported in several districts
According to Punjab Traffic Police, Khushab, Murree and Muzaffargarh recorded a 100 per cent reduction in fatal road accidents during the current year.
The department also said that seven districts of Punjab recorded fewer than two fatal accidents during the year.
In Lahore, the provincial capital, fatal accidents declined by 14 per cent, while other districts also reported substantial reductions.
Fatal accidents fell by 82 per cent in Sahiwal, 74 per cent in Rahim Yar Khan and 75 per cent in Layyah, according to the traffic police.
The figures were shared by the Punjab Traffic Police as part of an assessment of road safety efforts across the province.
Enforcement and awareness cited as key factors
DIG Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazir congratulated the traffic police force over the reported reduction in fatal accidents.
According to the DIG, identifying the causes of accidents and introducing appropriate safety measures have contributed to the decline.
He said strict enforcement against traffic violations, combined with public awareness campaigns, has helped improve road safety.
The traffic police have also been conducting enforcement operations against drivers who violate traffic laws, with officials saying action is being taken without discrimination.
Technology improves traffic monitoring
Punjab Traffic Police also highlighted the use of technology in improving traffic discipline.
According to Muhammad Waqas Nazir, the effective use of OneApp e-challans and modern traffic cameras has contributed to better enforcement and improved compliance with traffic regulations.
Digital monitoring allows authorities to identify violations and take action without relying entirely on traditional roadside enforcement.
The increasing use of cameras and electronic challans is part of wider efforts to modernise traffic management across Punjab.
Road safety efforts to expand
The Punjab Traffic Police said the scope of road safety initiatives is being expanded across the province.
Officials said additional measures are being taken to promote safer travel and reduce the risk of serious accidents on Punjab’s roads.
The department said protecting human lives remains one of its main priorities and that further steps will be taken to improve road safety.
The reported reduction in fatal accidents comes as authorities continue to focus on traffic enforcement, driver awareness and improved monitoring of road users.
DIG urges motorists to follow traffic laws
DIG Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazir urged motorists to follow traffic rules to protect both themselves and other road users.
He said responsible driving and compliance with traffic regulations are essential for reducing accidents and making roads safer.
The traffic police also stressed the importance of continued public cooperation, particularly in following speed limits, obeying traffic signals and avoiding dangerous driving practices.
According to the department, the goal is to further expand road safety measures and support safer journeys across Punjab.
While the reported figures show a substantial decline in fatal accidents, continued enforcement and public cooperation will remain important for sustaining road safety improvements.
