Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched the fourth phase of the Green Tractor Scheme through a digital balloting process and opened the application portal for the fifth phase. The Punjab government plans to provide a combined 19,500 tractors to farmers during the 2026-27 fiscal year.
The digital balloting for Phase IV was conducted in Lahore in the presence of the chief minister. Masood Khan, son of Lal Khan from Attock, became the first successful applicant to receive a tractor under the latest phase. The programme is aimed at increasing access to agricultural machinery and supporting farm mechanisation across Punjab.
Under Phase IV, the provincial government will provide 10,000 tractors with engine capacities ranging from 50 to 65 horsepower. Each successful farmer will receive a subsidy of Rs. 750,000. The official Punjab Agriculture Department lists farmers with land holdings of at least five acres as eligible for this low-power tractor programme.
Applications have also been opened for Phase V of the scheme. Under this phase, 9,500 high-powered tractors ranging from 75 to 125 horsepower will be offered. The subsidy for each tractor will be Rs. 1 million. Farmers applying under the high-power programme are required to have at least seven acres of agricultural land, according to the Agriculture Department.
The Punjab government has allocated Rs. 17.6 billion for the Green Tractor Scheme. Officials said more than 213,637 farmers applied for the programme, while 128,757 were declared eligible for the balloting after verification through the Punjab Land Records Authority and Nadra.
According to the briefing presented during the launch, 24,000 tractors have already been provided to farmers under the programme with a subsidy of Rs. 1 million per tractor. Officials also highlighted the wider expansion of agricultural mechanisation in Punjab in recent years.
The briefing stated that 35,000 tractors were distributed during Maryam Nawaz’s two-and-a-half-year tenure, compared with 10,000 tractors over the previous two decades. It also said Rs. 20 billion had been spent on agricultural mechanisation during the same two-and-a-half-year period, compared with Rs. 3 billion over the preceding 20 years. These figures were presented by officials during the programme briefing.
The scheme also includes locally manufactured and assembled tractor models. Officials said 90-horsepower tractors are being manufactured locally, while 100-horsepower tractors are being assembled locally. Five locally manufactured tractor models have been included in the programme.
The Punjab Agriculture Department says district-wise quotas for the programme are determined according to the proportion of cultivated land. The latest phases are part of the provincial government’s broader agricultural mechanisation initiatives for the current fiscal year.
