Punjab CM Naqvi Provides Schools Winter Vacation Update

In response to worsening smog conditions, the Punjab government of Pakistan adjusted the winter vacation schedule for schools and colleges in the region. Interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi acknowledged the severity of the smog issue in Lahore, emphasizing that the city ranked among the most polluted globally.

While providing an update on school closures, Naqvi mentioned that administrative efforts were underway to tackle the situation. However, due to ongoing examinations, schools could not be closed before December 18. The chief minister attributed the increased smog levels to factors such as dust and traffic.

To address the escalating smog crisis, the Punjab government declared a Saturday holiday in schools until the end of January. Notably, schools and colleges remained open on Wednesdays and Fridays, marking a departure from the previous weeks. Despite these measures, Lahore retained its status as the world’s most polluted city, recording an air quality index (AQI) level of 233.

AQI levels between 150-200 are particularly harmful to individuals with asthma, respiratory issues, and heart problems. A higher AQI indicates poorer air quality, with a rating of 0-50 considered good.

The government’s decision to adjust the winter vacation schedule reflects an ongoing effort to balance educational needs with the pressing environmental concerns posed by severe smog in the region. The administrative focus on addressing the root causes of smog, such as dust and traffic, demonstrates a commitment to finding long-term solutions to combat pollution and improve air quality. The declared Saturday holiday and the decision to keep schools open on specific weekdays aim to strike a balance between minimizing educational disruptions and safeguarding public health amid challenging environmental conditions.
