The Punjab government has purchased five new cryoablation machines to expand access to advanced cancer treatment at major hospitals across the province.
The machines were acquired on the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and have now been dispatched to hospitals for installation.
Two of the machines will be installed at the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer in Lahore, while Nishtar Hospital, Allied Hospital and Benazir Bhutto Hospital will each receive one machine.
Punjab expands advanced cancer treatment
Cryoablation is an advanced treatment technique that uses extreme cold to destroy targeted cancerous tissue. The addition of new machines is expected to increase the availability of this specialized treatment for eligible patients across Punjab.
Punjab introduced its first cryoablation machine at Mayo Hospital in 2025.
Since its introduction, more than 70 Stage 1 cancer patients have reportedly received treatment through the facility free of cost.
The government says the expansion of cryoablation services will allow more patients to access modern cancer treatment without having to travel to a single major medical centre.
Machines to be installed at major hospitals
Two machines will be installed at the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer in Lahore, strengthening the province’s capacity for specialized cancer treatment at the facility.
Nishtar Hospital in Multan, Allied Hospital in Faisalabad and Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi will each receive one machine.
The distribution of the equipment is expected to improve access to advanced treatment in different parts of the province and provide patients with more options for specialized care closer to their homes.
Officials said the new machines would help extend modern cancer treatment to more cities and improve access for patients requiring specialized procedures.
Government highlights healthcare investment
Health Secretary Azmat Mahmood said the introduction of modern medical technology would strengthen Punjab’s healthcare infrastructure and improve access to specialized treatment.
He said the provincial government had already provided free cancer treatment worth billions of rupees to patients across Punjab.
The government’s latest investment in cryoablation equipment is part of broader efforts to expand specialized healthcare services and make advanced treatment available through public-sector hospitals.
More patients expected to benefit
With five additional machines being installed at major hospitals, healthcare authorities expect more eligible cancer patients to benefit from cryoablation services.
The expansion could also reduce pressure on existing facilities and make specialized treatment more accessible to patients from different regions of Punjab.
The government says the focus remains on improving healthcare facilities, introducing modern treatment technologies and providing financial support to patients who cannot afford expensive cancer care.
The installation of the new machines will further expand Punjab’s capacity to provide advanced cancer treatment through public hospitals.
