A Peruvian politician named Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has won a narrow victory in a local mayoral election, attracting international attention because his first names match those of two notorious fascist dictators. The 45-year-old candidate secured victory in Queropalca, a remote district in the Peruvian Andes.
Flores belongs to the centre-left Ahora Nación party. According to reported election results, he received 229 votes, finishing just 25 votes ahead of his closest rival from the right-wing Renovación Popular Perú party.
Election office data showed that slightly more than 700 people participated in the vote. Flores secured around 34 percent of the total votes, giving him a narrow win in the local contest.
Who Is Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores?
Flores will represent Queropalca, a small district with fewer than 1,000 residents in Peru’s Huánuco department. The area is located approximately 360 kilometres from the capital, Lima, in the country’s central region.
His candidate profile lists Queropalca as his birthplace. Although the election was local, his unusual name has attracted attention far beyond the district.
The names Hitler and Mussolini are associated with Adolf Hitler, the Nazi dictator of Germany, and Benito Mussolini, the fascist ruler of Italy. Both leaders played major roles in the Second World War and are widely remembered for authoritarian rule, repression and mass violence.
However, a person’s name alone does not establish their political ideology or personal beliefs. Flores’s election victory does not, by itself, indicate support for the historical figures whose names he shares.
Peru Has Seen Similar Cases Before
Flores is not the first Peruvian politician to attract attention because of a name associated with Adolf Hitler. In 2018, Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez was elected mayor of Yúngar, another district in Peru.
He reportedly campaigned using the slogan, “I’m the good Hitler,” drawing attention to the unusual name during his election campaign.
Similar cases have also occurred in other countries. In Namibia, politician Adolf Hitler Uunona attracted international headlines after winning a local election in 2020.
These cases have repeatedly sparked discussion about unusual personal names and their historical associations. They also show how local election victories can attract international interest when a candidate’s name becomes a major talking point.
For Flores, the immediate result is a narrow electoral victory in a small Andean district. His unusual name, however, has turned an otherwise little-known local contest into an international news story.
