Pakistan Railways has completed comprehensive master plans for the restoration and modernization of the historic Lahore and Taxila Railway Stations, with the goal of preserving their architectural heritage while enhancing facilities for passengers.
According to railway officials, the projects will receive support from the Punjab government, following directives from the provincial leadership to protect important historical landmarks and improve the country’s railway infrastructure.
The restoration plans have been designed to maintain the original architectural character of both stations while introducing modern improvements to passenger services, safety, accessibility, and overall infrastructure. Authorities also plan to remove unauthorized structures and additions that have affected the stations over the years.
As part of the project, both railway stations will receive upgraded lighting systems, improved landscaping, and modern public amenities without compromising their historical significance. Officials said the work will follow internationally recognized heritage conservation practices to ensure the buildings retain their cultural identity.
At Lahore Railway Station, the development includes structural rehabilitation of the heritage building, restoration of railway platforms, improvements to the drainage system, installation of heritage-style lighting, construction of a modern family waiting lounge, upgraded reservation and information counters, and additional passenger facilities to improve the travel experience.
Meanwhile, the Taxila Railway Station restoration plan includes new pedestrian walkways, organized parking areas, modern washroom facilities, and the restoration of the station’s historic ticket office. The old goods warehouse will be transformed into a café and restaurant, while landscaped public spaces and heritage exhibition areas will highlight the rich cultural history of Taxila.
Pakistan Railways said the restoration projects aim to protect two of the country’s most significant railway landmarks while making them more functional for modern travelers. Officials believe the upgrades will improve passenger convenience, encourage tourism, and demonstrate how historic public buildings can be successfully adapted for contemporary use without losing their heritage value.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen Pakistan’s railway network by preserving important cultural assets and creating more attractive transport hubs for both domestic and international visitors.
