Pakistan Displeased With Donald Lu’s Comments On Elections

Pakistan officially conveyed its dissatisfaction with US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu’s remarks regarding the February 8 general elections during a Congressional hearing in Washington the previous day. Lu, who served as a key witness at the hearing titled ‘Pakistan After the Elections: Examining the Future of Democracy in Pakistan and the US-Pakistan Relationship,’ called for an investigation into allegations of electoral fraud and highlighted concerns about restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly during the polls.

In response, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, emphasized the importance of Pakistan’s relationship with the United States but noted several misunderstandings regarding Pakistani election laws during the Congressional panel session. Baloch addressed these concerns during the Foreign Office’s weekly press briefing, stating that there were inaccuracies in the understanding of Pakistani election regulations during the American committee meeting.
