The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has clarified the procedure for changing a name on a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC). The process includes specific document requirements, application steps, fees, and delivery timelines.
According to a report by 24NewsHD TV on Sunday, applicants must provide an updated Computerised Birth Certificate. The certificate must be issued by a Union Council, Municipal Committee, or Cantonment Board.
It must also contain the applicant’s updated name and a verified Civil Registration Management System (CRMS) number. Applicants seeking a name change due to a change of religion must submit an additional certificate from a Dar-ul-Ifta.
NADRA has also clarified that a person’s name on a CNIC can generally be changed only once during their lifetime. However, an exception applies to women who want to change their names after marriage.
Documents Required for a CNIC Name Change
Applicants must arrange the required documents before visiting a NADRA registration centre. The updated Computerised Birth Certificate is a key requirement for processing the request.
People changing their names due to religious reasons must also provide the relevant Dar-ul-Ifta certificate. NADRA has stated that applicants do not need to bring photocopies of their documents.
Instead, they should provide the relevant document numbers issued by NADRA or the concerned Union Council. Applicants should ensure their information is accurate to avoid potential delays during processing.
Steps to Change a Name on CNIC
NADRA has outlined several steps for applicants who want to update their names on their identity cards.
1. Obtain a Token
Applicants must visit a NADRA registration centre and obtain a token to begin the process. This allows them to proceed with the required application formalities.
2. Complete Biometric Verification
Applicants must complete the required biometric verification at the registration centre. This step helps verify their identity before the application proceeds.
3. Update Personal Information
NADRA staff will enter the corrected information into the system. Applicants must provide their fingerprints and have their photographs taken as part of the process.
4. Get the Application Approved
The application will undergo a review before approval. NADRA has clarified that applicants do not need attestation on the application form for CNIC modifications.
5. Pay the Required Fee
After approval, applicants will receive a confirmation message on their provided mobile number. They can then pay the applicable fee at a NADRA office or online, depending on their selected category.
6. Collect the Updated CNIC
Once the relevant processing period ends, applicants can collect their updated identity cards. The card must be received from the same NADRA office where they submitted their applications.
Important Rules for Applicants
Applicants should confirm that their supporting documents contain the correct information before starting the process. They should also remember the general lifetime limit on name changes.
Women seeking a name change after marriage are covered by an exception to this rule. Applicants should check the applicable fee category and processing timeline before submitting their requests.
