The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a Rs100 million project to strengthen the city’s emergency response, fire, and rescue infrastructure. The initiative aims to improve public safety by modernizing emergency facilities and reducing response times across Karachi.
The development program has been launched on the directives of Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab. It includes the rehabilitation, expansion, and establishment of several key emergency facilities to enhance the city’s ability to respond to fires, accidents, natural disasters, and coastal emergencies.
A major component of the project is the upgrade of KMC’s Emergency Response Center. The improved facility will focus on strengthening rescue operations along Karachi’s coastline, particularly at Hawksbay Beach, where drowning incidents increase during weekends, public holidays, and the coastal season.
According to KMC, the upgraded emergency center will be equipped with modern communication, coordination, and emergency response systems. The new infrastructure will enable faster deployment of rescue teams, lifesaving equipment, and other essential resources during emergencies at beaches and other high-risk areas.
As part of the project, KMC will also establish a new fire station in Maripur. The facility will serve nearby industrial, commercial, and residential areas, helping reduce emergency response times and improve firefighting and rescue services in one of Karachi’s busiest industrial zones.
The development plan also includes the rehabilitation of the Rainbow Center Fire Station, Lyari Fire Station, and the KMC Fire Headquarters. These upgrades are intended to improve the operational readiness, equipment, and overall efficiency of the city’s fire and rescue department.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab has directed the relevant departments to modernize emergency infrastructure according to international standards. He said protecting human lives remains KMC’s highest priority and emphasized that the city government is committed to providing timely and effective emergency services for Karachi’s residents.
The mayor added that the expanded emergency infrastructure will improve the city’s capacity to respond to fires, industrial accidents, traffic incidents, natural disasters, and coastal emergencies. He reaffirmed KMC’s commitment to building a safer Karachi through continued investment in modern public safety and emergency response systems.
